Grades 1-3
Introductory Activity – Family Poll
Materials: No supplies needed.
Guide kids to sit in a line or a circle. Say: “Today we are going to think about families. Listen carefully and follow directions. If you have one brother, clap once. If you have more than one brother, stomp your feet. If you have both brothers and sisters, stand up and sit down slowly. If you have one sister, snap your fingers. If you have no brothers, stand up, turn around, and sit down. If you have no sisters, clap twice. If you have more than one sister, flap your wings. If you have no brothers and no sisters, say ‘Me.’” Pause after each statement for kids to make the appropriate actions. As time allows, continue the game. Repeat the conditions or add things like younger/older brother/sister or other family members.
Live It Out
Game –Review Ball
Materials: six plastic cups, marker, table tennis ball
Number the cups 1-6. Arrange the cups on a table. Group the kids into teams. A player from Team 1 can bounce the ball on the table and try to bounce it into a cup. When the ball lands in a cup, ask a review question. If the team answers correctly, award the number of points on the cup. Now a player from Team 2 can bounce the ball into a cup. Continue alternating play among teams. Say the Life Point and talk about ways they can see God working in His creation. Say the Weekly Verse together.
Craft – Stick Puppet
Materials: white note cards, craft sticks, fine-point markers, masking tape, scissors
Invite a child to draw a picture of a person on a note card. She can draw a picture of herself or someone in her family. When she finishes the person figure, she can cut out the figure and tape the figure to the stick. Lead kids to print the Life Point on the craft stick. Talk about the Bible story. Suggest kids use their puppets to play out situations that show how God works in His creation.
Grades 4-6
Introductory Activity – Keep It In Bounds
Materials: masking tape or ropes, balloon
Create a zigzag boundary around the game area. Make the zigzag exaggerated in places and moving into and out of the game area in several places.
Tell kids that they must kick the balloon back and forth, up and down the area. They must work to keep the balloon in bounds, not going past the boundary. If the balloon floats out of the boundary, stop the game and say: “You broke the rules. The balloon is out of bounds.” Bring the balloon back and start the game again.
Say that all people go “out of bounds” and sin; people do things against God’s Word. Tell kids they will hear about someone who did not do what God wanted.
Live It Out
Game – Bounce and Say
Materials: beach ball (one per team)
Display the Weekly Verse and say it together. Practice the verse several times. Group the kids into two or more teams, depending on the size of your class. Lead each team to stand in a small circle. Tell kids that the teams will gently bat the ball back and forth across the team circle. As each person hits the ball, the team will say a word of the verse. The team should keep batting the ball up and saying the words of the verse until the entire verse is said. If the team misses or drops the ball, they must start at the beginning of the verse as they restart the ball. The team who can complete the verse first without any misses wins.
Talk about the Bible story. Say that God works in His creation and know all that happens. Remind the kids that they cannot hide anything from God. Repeat the game with teams saying words of the Life Point instead of the verse.
Craft – Choices Door Hanger
Materials: construction paper, scissors, markers
Give each child a piece of construction paper and ensure they have access to scissors and markers. Instruct them to turn their paper sideways and to cut it vertically in half. Tell them to poke a hole in the top and then cut out a circle about the size of a door handle. Direct them to write the Weekly Verse on the door hanger and then decorate it however they want. Encourage them to use the door hanger in their room to remind them to make wise choices, unlike Cain. Say the Weekly Verse together.
