Bible Story: Jesus Prayed for His Disciples John 17:9,20-23

Weekly Verse: Jesus prayed for His friends. John 17:9
Materials: 3 Bibles of different sizes, poster board, marker, box, shredded paper
- Trace around each Bible onto the poster board. Hide the Bibles in the box of shredded paper.
- Invite a preschooler to find the Bibles in the box. When a Bible is found, help him match it to its outline.
- Open a Bible to John. Comment that we can read in the Bible that Jesus prayed for His friends. Comment that we can pray for others, too.
3–Pre-K— Make a Prayer Reminder

Weekly Verse: Jesus prayed for His disciples. John 17:9
Materials: Teaching Picture 13, white and colored construction paper, pencils, markers, colorful stickers, scissors, glue
- Display the Teaching Picture with the other materials. Tell the Bible story as children arrive at the center. Point to the Teaching Picture. Comment that Jesus prayed for His disciples, and we can pray for other people, too.
- Give each child a piece of white paper. Help children trace around one hand and cut out the handprint. Then they can glue the handprint onto colored paper. Help them think of five people they could pray for and print each name onto one finger of the handprint. Children can decorate around their handprints using the stickers and markers.
- Tell the children to put the reminder in a place to help them remember to pray for the people named on their handprint.
Kindergarten—Write Prayer Cards

Materials: Teaching Picture 13, blank cards and envelopes, markers, gel pens, paper
- Before the session, decide on one or more people from your church’s prayer list that the children can pray for. Print on the paper simple sentences for kindergartners to print such as We prayed for you., God loves you., and Jesus loves you. Display the Teaching Picture with the other materials.
- Tell the Bible story as children show interest in the activity. Comment that Jesus prayed for His disciples and we can pray for others, too. Talk briefly about the person or people who need prayer and explain how kids can pray for them. Allow each child to say a brief prayer, if he wishes, for one of the people.
- Encourage each child to make a card for one of the people. Show and read the sentences you printed and tell kids to print one or more of these on the cards.
- After each child finishes her card, place it in an envelope and print the person’s name on the outside. Give the cards to your church office to mail, or mail them yourself.
