Introductory Activity – Name That Rhyme
- No materials needed
Select a word that rhymes with pray (such as day). Tell kids: “I’m thinking of a word that rhymes with pray. Can you guess it in five tries?” Call on 3 volunteers. If no one guesses in three tries, give a clue: “This is something on a calendar.” Call on 2 more volunteers. If neither guess, give the answer. Choose a kid to think of a rhyme for others to guess. Continue through several rounds. Tell kids that they will think more about prayer today.
Live It Out
Game – Blow the Bible Verse
- Thin craft foam or heavyweight paper, permanent marker, scissors, straws (one per child)
Cut craft foam into small rectangles. Print each word of the Bible Verse on a rectangle. Make several sets of verse words. Scatter each set of verse words on a different table (or opposite ends of tables).
Group kids into groups, one group for each set of words. Give each child a straw. Lead each group to stand around the set of words. On your signal, the groups should work together to blow the verse words around the table and put the words in order. When a group blows all the words into order, they should stand and shout “Yes!” Talk about the verse and the Life Point.
Craft – Door Reminder
- Heavyweight paper, markers, stickers, ribbon, glue, collage materials, scissors
Lead kids to cut circles or other shapes from heavyweight paper. Help a child cut a length of ribbon, fold it, and glue the ends to the back of her shape to create a hanger. Tell her to print The Holy Spirit helps Christians pray in the middle of the shape. She can use the art materials to decorate around the question. Talk about the Bible story and the Life Point. Suggest kids print the Bible verse on the backs of their shapes. Tell kids to hang the reminder on the doorknobs to their rooms. They can be reminded to pray when they see the doorknob reminder.
Grades 4-6
Introductory Activity – Communication
- Pencil, stone, megaphone, flashlight, scissors, whistle, cell phone
Show each item in turn to the kids. Ask: “How can you use this to communicate with someone? Think of as many different ways as you can.” Tell kids to discuss their ideas with partners nearby. Then call for answers. Think of different ways that people communicate. List some other tools that kids use to communicate with others. Say: “Today we will talk more about how we communicate with God.”
Live It Out
Game – Get It Write
- Paper, pencils
Group kids into three groups. Ask a review question. Lead each group to write down its answer as a group. Teams should stand when they have finished their answers. Call on a group to give its answer. Tell kids to sit and ask another review question. Talk about the Life Point.
Craft – Prayer Banners
- Construction paper, scissors, markers, tape, yarn or ribbon
Guide each kid to cut 5 squares or triangles. The kid can draw print words or draw pictures about the Holy Spirit and prayer. Talk about today’s Bible story and other stories about prayer as kids work. When a preteen finishes, help him cut a length of yarn. (Choose whatever length works best for the shapes cut.) He can lay his five shapes face down and place the yarn along the tops of the shapes. He can tape the shapes to the yarn and tie loops at both ends. Say the Life Point. Tell kids they can hang their banners somewhere at home to remind them to pray and to remember that the Holy Spirit helps Christians when they pray.
