Grades 1–6: Jesus, the Savior — Session 1: Jesus Entered Jerusalem (April 2)

February 15, 2023 By Kimba Campbell Leave a Comment

Grades 1-3

Introductory Activity – Intro Music

Materials: music player

Before class, pick an upbeat, fun Christian song that your children will like and download it to your digital device. In class, explain to your children that many players walk to home plate in baseball games with “intro music.” Ask for volunteers to walk into the class to your “intro music” in such a way that best shows their personality. Each time a child walks in, have the class cheer for them. Afterward, tell your children in today’s lesson that they will see Jesus uniquely enter Jerusalem, and many people cheered for Him.

Live It Out

Game – Hee-haw!

Materials: no materials needed

Remind your children that Jesus rode a donkey into Jerusalem. Ask for volunteers to take part in a donkey hee-haw competition. Each volunteer will make their best “hee-haw,” and the class will vote on their favorite. Afterward, have everyone say the Life Point together.

Craft – Jesus Guides Me Compass

Materials: paper plate, markers, construction paper, brad fasteners, scissors

Hand out the supplies to all your children. Instruct the children to turn the paper plate upside down. Tell them to write Non the top of the plate, E on the right side, S on the bottom, and W on the left side. Next, instruct them to draw an arrow on the construction paper and cut it out. Tell them to place the flat end of the arrow in the middle of the plate and stick the brad fastener through the arrow and plate, making a compass. Instruct them to write the Weekly Verse on the plate and to decorate their compass. Afterward, have everyone read the Weekly Verse together.

Grades 4-6

Introductory Activity – Praise Rap

Materials: paper, pencil

Form groups of four with your children. Give each group a piece of paper and a pencil. Instruct them to write a short rap that praises Jesus. Give the groups about five minutes to create their raps. Afterward, allow each group to perform their rap. Tell your children that people all over the world praise Jesus differently, and in today’s lesson, they will see people shout their praises and lay down coats and tree branches. Have everyone say the Life Point together.

Game – Praise Competition

Materials: no materials needed

Form two teams with your children. On the board, write the praise the people said in Matthew 21:9. Instruct the teams to form their own cheers using the praise from verse 9. Give the teams about five minutes to prepare. Allow both teams to present their cheers. Remind your children of the Life Point. Tell them that since Jesus is the only way to God, He is worthy of our praise.

Craft – Finding Jesus

Materials: construction paper, markers

Hand out the construction paper and markers to your children. At the top of the page, instruct the children to write I AM THE WAY, THE TRUTH, AND THE LIFE. Underneath, tell them to draw a large rectangle. Have them put a stick man on the top left and a cross on the bottom right. Instruct them to create a maze inside the rectangle to lead the stick man to the cross. Encourage your children to ask one of their parents to solve the maze after class. Write the Weekly Verse on the board and have everyone say it together.
