Grades 1-3
Introductory Activity – Nature Walk
Materials: no materials needed
Take your children for a walk outside. Encourage them to examine nature around them, from the trees, to the grass and bugs. As you walk with them, ask them about what they observe. Return to the room and tell the kids that they will hear about people quarreling and how the quarrel was solved. Say the Life Point together.
Live It Out
Game – Sheep Race
Materials: pictures of sheep
Find a simple picture of a sheep online, print 20 copies, and cut them out. In class, form two teams with your children and place them in lines. Give each team ten sheep. Tell them their objective is to pass each sheep from one end of the line to the other, one at a time. Once the person at the end of the line receives a sheep, he is to “baa” like a sheep, which means the person at the front of the line can begin passing the next sheep. The team that passes all the sheep to the end of the line first is the winner! Remind the kids that Abram and Lot figured out how to separate so that their families could live in peace with each other. Have everyone say the Weekly Verse together.
Craft – “Sand” Art
Materials: salt, food coloring, paper, glue, paintbrushes, small bowls, pencils
Before class, create several colors of “salt sand.” Pour ½ cup of salt into a ziplock back and add 5-6 drops of food coloring. Knead the bag until all the salt is colored. In class, give each child a piece of paper, a paintbrush, and a pencil. Ensure everyone has access to the salt sand and white glue that has been poured into small bowls. Instruct your children to draw Abraham and Lot looking over the land in today’s lesson. Tell them to paint each section with glue and then pour the salt sand onto that section. After they pour sand on one section, they should pour the loose sand back into the container. Instruct them to color their entire picture with this method. Afterward, allow several volunteers to share their pictures with the class. Say the Life Point together.
Grades 4-6
Introductory Activity – Tent Building
Materials: blankets, chairs, tables, pillows
Form several groups with your children. Instruct them to build tents out of the blankets you’ve provided, along with the chairs and tables in your room. Give your children pillows to sit on, if possible, and have everyone sit in their tents facing you. Tell them that families must work together, just like they worked together to build their tents. Inform them that in today’s lesson, they will hear about how two family members had to work together to solve an argument. Say the Life Point together. If feasible, teach the lesson while everyone is in their tents.
Live It Out
Game – Rope of Peace
Materials: rope
Place a rope on the ground and form two teams with your children. Place the teams at each end of the rope, like they will play tug-of-war. As your children think they are about to tug on the rope, inform them they are actually going to work together. Instruct them to work together to form various shapes with the rope: square, rectangle, triangle, etc. Afterward, explain that sometimes family members “tug” against each other instead of working together. But when families work together, they can accomplish great things! Say the Life Point and Weekly Verse together.
Craft – Land Surveyor
Materials: paper, colored pencils
Give your children a piece of paper and colored pencils. Instruct your children to close their eyes as you read Genesis 13:14-17 to them. Tell them to imagine the scene as you read the verses. After you finish reading the passage, instruct them to draw and color the scene they imagined in their minds. As they work, remind the kids that Abram and Lot worked together to find a solution to their problem. Afterward, allow several volunteers to show their drawings to the class.
