Grades 1-3
Introductory Activity – Map of Escape
Materials: paper, markers
Give every child a piece of paper and markers. Show them a map of the route the Israelites took when they fled Egypt and crossed the Red Sea. Direct them to draw their own map of the Israelites’ route, and encourage them to use creativity to as they put their map together. Allow several volunteers to show their maps to the rest of the class. Explain to the children that in today’s lesson, they will learn about how God miraculously provided for the Israelites when they were trapped on the shores of the Red Sea. Say the Life Point together.
Live It Out
Game – Red Sea Adventure
Materials: various objects from your classroom, blue painter’s tape, blindfolds
Put down two lines of tape on your floor, about ten feet apart. These lines of tape will represent the walls of water the Israelites walked in between when they fled from the Egyptians. Next, place various objects from your room on the floor between the lines. During class, form two teams with your children. Tell your children they are the Israelites, and they must make it to the other side of the red sea while blindfolded. One team member must stand outside the water wall and guide their blindfolded teammates through the course with only their voice. If their teammate touches one of the obstacles, he must go back to the starting line. The teams can only send one person at a time through the course. The team that gets everyone through the course first wins! Say the Life Point together. Remind the kids that God used His power to help the Israelites escape from Egypt.
Craft – Pillar of Cloud
Materials: cotton balls, blue construction paper, markers, glue
Give every child a piece of construction paper, cotton balls, and markers. Instruct them to create a large cloud on their paper by gluing the cotton balls to the upper half of the paper. Direct them to draw the Israelites walking through the Red Sea underneath the cloud. Instruct them to write the Weekly Verse at the top of their page.
Grades 4-6
Introductory Activity – Tarp Turnover
Materials: blue tarp
Lay a blue tarp on the floor and instruct your children to stand on it. Tell them that the blue tarp represents the Red Sea and they have to get to the other side. To get to the other side, they must flip over the tarp without anyone stepping off it. Afterward, remind your children that God helped the Israelites cross the Red Sea and read the Life Point to them.
Live It Out
Game – Escape Skits
Materials: no materials needed
Form several groups with your children, with each group having three to four members. Direct your children to create a small skit about the Israelites crossing the Red Sea. Give the groups about five minutes to create their skits. Afterward, allow each group to perform their skit for the rest of the class. Write the Weekly Verse on the board and have everyone say it together.
Craft – Moses’ Staff
Materials: large sticks, blue ribbon, clear tape
Before class, gather many large sticks. (If your church is close to trees, you can have your children find their own large sticks during the activity. Or buy large dowel rods.) Allow the children to choose a stick and give them blue and red ribbons to attach to the stick with clear tape. The stick represents Moses’ staff, and the ribbon represents the water of the Red Sea. After everyone has finished their staff, allow them to act out raising their staff over the Red Sea. Write the Weekly Verse on the board and have everyone say it together.
