Preschool: What Does the Church Do?: Session 3—An Ethiopian Heard About Jesus (February 21)

November 6, 2020 By Kimba Campbell 1 Comment

1s & 2s— Paint with Vehicles

Bible Story: An Ethiopian Heard About Jesus Acts 8:26-40
Life Point: People at church learn from the Bible.
Weekly Verse: Philip told the good news about Jesus. Acts 8:35

Materials: Teaching Picture 12; toy truck, car, wagon; shallow pan; paper towels; washable paint; painting smocks; paper; marker or pencil

  • Fold a wet paper towel and lay it inside the shallow pan. Pour paint over the towel to make a stamping surface.
  • Help a child put on a smock before painting. Print a child’s name on a paper. Show how to roll a vehicle over the paint and then onto a paper.
  • Talk about the Bible story as preschoolers paint. Point to the picture and mention that the man was traveling in a chariot. Comment that Philip helped the man learn from the Bible.
  • Social Distancing Tip: Paint with one child at a time. After he finishes painting, help him wash his hands and disinfect the smock.

3–Pre-K— Talk on Telephones

Bible Story: An Ethiopian Heard About Jesus Acts 8:26-40
Life Point: At church, people learn about baptism.
Weekly Verse: Philip told the good news about Jesus. Acts 8:35

Materials: Teaching Picture 12, toy telephones, old cell phones (remove batteries)

  • Show the Teaching Picture and tell the Bible story as children. Comment that Philip helped the man understand the Bible scroll, told him about Jesus, and baptized him.
  • Suggest that children use the phones to “call” people and tell them about Jesus. Help the children remember things they learned at church about Jesus. Encourage them to say the Bible verse.
  • Social Distancing Tip: Disinfect the telephones after each child’s use.

Kindergarten— Play a Nature Game

Bible Story: An Ethiopian Heard About Jesus Acts 8:26-40
Life Point: At church, people learn about baptism.
Weekly Verse: Philip told the good news about Jesus. Acts 8:35

Materials: Teaching Picture 1; assorted nature items such as rocks, shells, twigs, flowers, leaves, toy lizards or insects, and so forth; poster board; marker; bag

  • Collect at least two of each item that are different sizes. Trace the items onto the poster board. Display the Teaching Picture on the floor near the board. Place the items in the bag.
  • Tell the Bible story. Point to the Teaching Picture and comment that Philip and the man were outside. Ask what kinds of things the men might have seen.
  • Show the gameboard. Invite a child to choose an item from the bag and match it to its outline. When all the items are matched, encourage kids to say the Bible verse with you.
  • Ask: “What happened at the end of the story?” (Philip baptized the man.) Say that we learn about baptism at church.
  • Social Distancing Tip: Allow only two kids to play the game at one time. Tell the kids to wash their hands before and after the game.
