1s & 2s—Carry a Basket with a Friend
Bible Story: Jonathan and David Promised to Be Friends 1 Samuel 14:49; 18:1-4; 20
Life Point: People can choose to love and become friends.
Weekly Verse: God loves us, so we should love others. 1 John 4:11
Materials: Bible, Teaching Picture11, small laundry basket or market basket with a handle
- Put the Bible and the teaching picture into the basket.
- Invite two children to work together to carry the basket.
- When they set down the basket, take out the Bible and tell the Bible story. Show the picture of David and Jonathan.
- Say that people can choose to love and become friends. Open the Bible and say the Weekly Verse.
3–Pre-K—Make a Friendship Chain

Materials: construction paper cut into 2-by-9-inch strips, markers, circle stickers, tape or stapler with staples
- Print the name of each child in your class on a paper strip. Keep a few blank strips to use for visitors.
- Invite each child to decorate the strip with his name. When he is finished, help him tape or staple his strip into a circle. If he is not the first one finished, show him how to thread his strip through another circle before attaching the ends.
- Talk about the Bible story as children decorate their strips. Comment that Jonathan and David loved each other and became friends. Say that they can become friends with others, too. Say the Weekly Verse together.
- Display your friendship chain in the room for kids to see.
Kindergarten—Paint with a Friend

Materials: paper; two colors of paint in bowls; two marbles; spoons; round container with lid, such as an oatmeal box
- As kids roll the container talk about the Bible story. Remind the kids that David and Jonathan were good friends. Comment that people can choose to love and become friends.
- Guide kids to choose a friend with whom to paint.
- Help one child to fit a piece of paper into the round container, then lay it on its side.
- Assist in spooning a marble from each bowl onto the paper and putting on the lid.
- Direct the friends to gently roll the container across the table to one another. After five or six rolls, remove the lid and the paper. Continue for the second friend.
