Preschool: Jesus, the Teacher: Session 5—Jesus Washed the Disciples’ Feet (January 30)

1s & 2s— Clean the Room

Bible Story: Jesus Washed the Disciples’ Feet John 13:1-20
Life Point: Jesus taught that people should help one another.
Weekly Verse: Jesus said, “Do as I have done for you.” John 13:15

Materials: toy broom, cloths, spray bottles

  • Invite preschoolers to use the items to pretend to clean the room.
  • Comment that they are being kind and loving others by helping.
  • Say Jesus taught His friends to help others when He washed their feet.

3–Pre-K— Paint with Shoes

Bible Story: Jesus Washed the Disciples’ Feet John 13:1-20
Life Point: Jesus taught that people should help one another.
Weekly Verse: Jesus said, “Do as I have done for you.” John 13:15

Materials: paint, aluminum pie pans, paper towels, painting smocks, paper, marker, baby shoes

  • Put a wet paper towel into an aluminum pan. Pour paint over the towel to make a stamping surface. Arrange the materials on a table.
  • Help a preschooler put on a smock before painting. Guide her to press the sole of a shoe in the paint and then on her paper.
  • Talk about the Bible story as children paint. Comment that Jesus taught His friends to help others when He washed their feet.
  • Print a child’s name on his paper when he is finished.

Kindergarten—Write Cards for Homebound

Bible Story: Jesus Washed the Disciples’ Feet John 13:1-20
Life Point: Jesus taught that people should help one another.
Weekly Verse: Jesus said, “Do as I have done for you.” John 13:15

Materials: cardstock folded into cards, markers, decorative stickers (no fantasy), paper, large brown envelope

  • Before the session choose one or two members of your church who are homebound or in the hospital. Address a large brown envelope with the correct address.
  • On sheets of paper print the Weekly Verse and other encouraging phrases like I prayed for you or Jesus loves you.
  • Invite kindergartners to make a card for someone. Explain that the person to whom you will give the cards cannot come to church.
  • Tell kids to copy the verse and one of the other phrases onto their cards. They can decorate them by drawing or adding decorative stickers.
  • Tell the Bible story as the kids work. Say that Jesus taught about helping others when He washed the disciples’ feet.
  • Pray for the person or persons who will receive the cards. Thank kids for showing love and being kind like Jesus.
