Preschool: Jesus’ Birth: Session 2—God Chose Mary and Joseph (December 12)

1s & 2s— Hammer Play Dough

Bible Story: God Chose Mary and Joseph Luke1:26-56; Matthew 1:18-24
Life Point: God chose a family for Jesus.
Weekly Verse: Mary will give birth to a son, and you will name Him Jesus. Luke 1:31

Materials: Teaching Picture 2, play dough, toy hammers

  • Display the Teaching Picture near the play dough.
  • Give each child a small lump of play dough and a toy hammer. Encourage her to flatten the play dough with the hammer.
  • Talk about the Bible story as children play. Mention that Joseph was a carpenter and used a hammer. Tell preschoolers that God chose Mary and Joseph to be Jesus’ family.
  • Pray, thanking God for choosing a family for Jesus.

3–Pre-K— Draw to Music

Bible Story: God Chose Mary and Joseph Luke1:26-56; Matthew 1:18-24

Materials: easel, paper, markers, Music

  • Print the Weekly Verse on a paper before putting on the easel or a child to copy. Read the verse aloud with the child.
  • Invite the child to draw at the easel while the music plays a Christmas song.
  • Tell the Bible story. Comment that Mary was happy and sang a song of thanks to God.
  • Comment that God chose Mary and Joseph to be Jesus’ family.

Kindergarten— Play with Tools

Bible Story: God Chose Mary and Joseph Luke1:26-56; Matthew 1:18-24

Materials: wooden blocks,toy tools, measuring instruments, tool aprons, safety goggles, clipboards, paper, pencils

  • Arrange the materials near the blocks.
  • Invite the boys and girls to use the tools with the blocks. Some children may enjoy planning something on paper or writing down measurements.
  • Tell the Bible story as the children play. Comment that Joseph was a carpenter and used tools to build furniture and houses. Say that God chose Mary and Joseph to be Jesus’ family.
  • Pray, thanking God for sending Jesus.
