Preschool: Follow Jesus’s Example: Session 2—Jesus Prayed in a Garden (September 13)

1s & 2s— Make Play Dough Flowers

Bible Story: Jesus Prayed in a Garden Mark 14:32-40; Luke 22:39-46
Life Point: We can pray.
Weekly Verse: Lord, teach us to pray. Luke 11:1

Materials: Teaching Picture 2, play dough, flower cookie cutters

  • Display the teaching picture with the play dough. Give each preschool a lump of play dough. Tell the preschoolers they can use the cookie cutters to make flowers.
  • Point to the teaching picture and comment that Jesus prayed in a garden. Continue to tell the Bible story as preschoolers play. 
  • Say the Life Point and the Weekly Verse.

3–Pre-K— Sponge Paint on People Shapes

Bible Story: Jesus Prayed in a Garden Mark 14:32-40; Luke 22:39-46
Life Point: We can pray.
Weekly Verse: Lord, teach us to pray. Luke 11:1

Materials: large people shapes, paint in shallow pans, painting smocks, sponges, spring clothespins, safety pins, marker

  • Put a safety pin on one flat side of each sponge. Clip a clothespin onto to the safety pin. Cover the art table with newspaper. Print the Weekly Verse on each people shape.
  • Give each child a person shape. Show him how to dip the sponge in the paint and press it onto his shape.
  • Talk about the Bible story as children paint. Say that Jesus prayed for His disciples. Tell the children that we can pray and God hears people when we pray. Pray and thank God for hearing us.

Kindergarten— Match Weekly Verse Words

Bible Story: Jesus Prayed in a Garden Mark 14:32-40; Luke 22:39-46
Life Point: We can pray.
Weekly Verse: Lord, teach us to pray. Luke 11:1

Materials: Teaching Picture 2, index cards, pen

  • Before the session, print on the cards the Weekly Verse, one word per card. Make two sets. Arrange the cards facedown on a table. Display the teaching picture. each set of cards. Talk about the Bible story as the children find the matches.
  • Point to the teaching picture and comment that Jesus was praying because He knew that He would soon die on the cross.
  • After all the matches are found, help the children put the Weekly Verse in order. Say it together. Say the Life Point: “We can pray.”
