Introductory Activity – Musical Hoops
Materials: plastic hoops, music
Lay the hoops on the floor around the game area. Play music and lead kids to walk around and among the hoops. Stop the music. Tell kids that everyone should stand in a hoop (at least one foot in a hoop). Play a couple of rounds. Remove at least 2 hoops. Play a few more rounds. Remove more hoops. Continue until you have only 1-2 hoops for all the kids to use. Comment that the kids are gathered all together. Today they being a unit about worshiping God.
Live It Out
Game – Review Basketball
Materials: small ball, basket or trash can
Group the kids into two or more teams. Ask Team 1 a review question. If the team answers the question correctly, award 3 points. After a correct answer, give the ball to a team member to shoot into the trash can. If the ball goes into the can, award 2 more points to the team. Ask Team 2 a question. Continue to alternate between/among teams to review the story. Say the Life Point together.
Craft – Draw a Church
Materials: paper, crayons, markers
Guide the kids to draw a picture of a church building. Suggest the draw a picture of their church building, or they can draw a different church. Talk about the Bible story as the kids draw. Read the weekly Bible verse, Colossians 3:16. Say that people praise and pray to God at church. Ask kids to tell you what their favorite part of church is.
Grades 4-6
Introductory Activity – Worship Acrostic
Materials: paper, pencils
Give each kid a piece of paper and a pencil. Guide kids to print WORSHIP down the left side of the paper. Lead kids to work alone or with partners to list words that begin with each letter that are related to worshiping God. Tell kids that they will discover more about worshiping God today.
Live It Out
Game – Silent Order
Materials: words of the Life Point written on paper, one word per page (one set per team)
Group the kids into two teams. (Create more teams if your group is large.) Hand a set of mixed words to each team. Guide team members to hold the words and stand in a line. On your signal, team members work together silently to put the sentence in order. No team member may speak or make a sound. When a team completes the sentence, members hold the words over their heads (still silent). Talk about the Life Point and the Bible story.
Craft – Create a Worship Bulletin
Materials: paper, pencils, markers, copies of worship bulletin
Show the kids a worship bulletin for your church. Talk about some of the different activities that your church does during the worship service. Encourage the kids to create their own worship bulletins. They can follow the form of the bulletin for your church or make their own. Encourage them to include some of their favorite hymns and songs.
