Grades 1-3
Introductory Activity – Observe God’s Beautiful Creation
Materials: no supplies needed
Tell the kids that you will take them on a walk around the church property and that you want them to observe God’s creation carefully. On the walk, periodically stop and ask the kids to tell you what they observe. Ask: “Do you see anything you’ve never seen before?” When your class returns to your room, write the Weekly Verse on the board and have everyone say it together.
Live It Out
Game – Creation Storytelling
Materials: no materials needed
Form several groups with the kids and have each group sit in a circle. Inform the groups that they will create a story, with each person contributing one sentence to the story at a time. Tell the groups that the story must include animals and be set in God’s creation. Give the groups time to create their stories. Afterward, allow the groups to share the topics of their stories.
Craft – Creation Puppets
Materials: paper lunch sacks, markers
Give a paper lunch sack to each child and ensure they have access to markers. Instruct them to turn the sack upside down, where the bottom of the sack is at the top. Tell them to use markers to draw and create their favorite animal, where the bottom of the sack will be the animal’s face. Afterward, have everyone walk around the room with their animal puppet and introduce their animals to each other. Instruct your kid to have their animal “share” where they live and what they like to do. Afterward, write the Life Point on the board and lead the animal puppets say it together.
Grades 4-6
Introductory Activity – Creation Hunt
Materials: paper, pencils
Form several groups with the kids. Give each group a piece of paper and a pencil. Inform the groups that you will take them outside to observe God’s creation. Tell them to write down everything they observe that God has made. Give the groups 8-10 minutes to observe and record. Once you are back in your room, allow each group to share their lists. Afterward, write the Weekly Verse on the board and have everyone say it together.
Live It Out
Game – Memory Mix-Up
Materials: note cards, markers, pen
Before class, choose several verses from Psalm 104. For each verse, write the verse on one card and draw a corresponding picture on another card, creating a pair. Do this with multiple verses. Place all of the cards in an envelope. In class, place all of the cards upside down on the floor in a grid. Give children turns flipping over two cards and looking for cards where the verse and picture match. Allow each child to have a turn.
Suggestions for card pairs:
Pair 1 – Write Psalm 104:5 on one card. Draw the world on the other card.
Pair 2 – Write Psalm 104:12 on one card. Draw a bird on the other card.
Pair 3 – Write Psalm 104:25 on one card. Draw water on the other card.
Create as many pairs as you like.
Craft – Anywhere in Creation
Materials: paper, markers, colored pencils
Give each child a piece of paper and ensure they have access to the other supplies. Direct them to draw and color the one place on earth they would like to visit. Encourage them to be creative and show the wonder of God’s creation in their pictures. Direct them to write the Weekly Verse across the top of their picture. Afterward, allow several volunteers to share their pictures with the class.
