Grades 1–6: Telling About Jesus — Session 3: Paul Listened to God (May 17)

Grades 1-3

Introductory Activity – Listen and Move

No materials needed

Stand at one end of the game area. Lead the kids to line up shoulder to shoulder, facing you, on the other end of the game area. Tell kids to listen to what you say. When you say “Forward,” they move toward you. When you say “Wait,” they freeze where they are. When you say “Reverse,” they move away from you. Play for a few minutes, saying the different commands. Tell the kids that today Paul listened to God to know where to go.

Game – Pop Off the Point

Materials: paper, marker, play parachute or flat bed sheet

Write the words of the Life Point on paper, one word per page. Wad the paper into balls. (For more of a challenge, wad a few blank piece of paper, too.) Guide kids to all hold a side of the parachute or sheet. Toss the paper wads onto the parachute. Guide kids to move the parachute up and down until a few paper wads fall off. Check the words that fell off the parachute. Find the first word of the Point. Wad up the words that are not the first word and put back on the parachute. Continue to pop off the words to find each word in order. Say the Life Point together. Talk about what Paul did and how he listened to God.

Craft – Dotted Picture

Materials: paper, ink pads, unsharpened pencils

Guide kids to press the erasers on the pencils onto the ink pad and make dots on paper. Lead each kid to spell the words HOLY SPIRIT on his paper with dots. Tell kids they can add other dots and designs around the words. As kids work, talk about the Bible story and the Life Point.

Grades 4-6

Introductory Activity – Communication

Materials: pencil, stone, megaphone, flashlight, scissors, whistle, cell phone

Show each item in turn to the kids. Ask: “How can you use this to communicate with someone? Think of as many different ways as you can.” Tell kids to discuss their ideas with partners nearby. Then call for answers. Think of different ways that people communicate. List some other tools that kids use to communicate with others. Tell kids that in the Bible story today they will hear how God communicated with someone.

Game – Flying Questions

Materials: paper or plastic plates, marker

Write review questions on the plates, one question per plate. You can make more than one set of questions. Give each preteen a plate; add blank plates as needed. On your signal, kids can toss the plates like flying discs. As plates land near the kids, they pick them up and toss them again. Call for kids to stop; tell each one to pick up a plate. Call on a preteen to read the question on her plate and answer it. She can ask a friend for help as needed. After the question is answered, tell kids to toss the plates again. If the called preteen holds a blank plate, she can say the Life Point or the verse.

Craft – Compass

Materials: paper plates, construction paper, scissors, markers, brads, other art materials

Guide the preteens to use the materials to make compass reminders. They can cut the middles from the plates as a base. They can cut points or arrows from the paper and use brads to attach these to the middle of the circles. Suggest they write the verse or Life Point around the compass. As they work, talk about how Paul knew where to go. Say that the Holy Spirit is at work in the world and will help Christians know what to do and where to go. Pray for missionaries and others who tell about Jesus.
