Grades 1–6: Tell About Jesus — Session 1: Paul and Barnabas Were Missionaries  (June 1)

Grades 1-3

Introductory Activity – We Love Jesus

Materials: None

Have half the class stand on one side of the room and the other half on the other side of the room. Instruct the kids one side to softly call out to the other side of the room, “We love Jesus, yes we do. We love Jesus how about you?” The kids on the other side should repeat the same chant back a little louder. Keep going getting louder each time. Explain missionaries tell others about God’s love.  

Live It Out

Game – Stay, Stay, Go

Materials: None

Play a game like “Duck, Duck, Goose.” Have the kids sit in a circle. One child goes around the circle saying, “stay, stay, go!” The “go” child chases after the first child and tries to catch him. Talk about how God chooses people to go and tell others about Jesus.

Craft – Thumb Print People

Materials: paper, markers, inkpads, moist wipes. 

Guide the kids to draw stick figures and give them thumb print faces. Explain how people need someone to tell them about Jesus. In the Bible story God chose Paul and Barnabas to go and tell others about Jesus.

Grades 4-6

Introductory Activity – Guess the Country

Materials: whiteboard, marker, eraser

Before the session, decide on 5 or more countries the kids would know. Form two teams of kids. Explain that each team will take turns guessing a letter to reveal the name of a country. Write a correct letter guessed in a blank and an incorrect letter to the side. Give a point to the team that guesses the correct country. Tell the kids that they will hear about two men who were chosen to go to other countries to tell people about Jesus.

Live It Out

Game – Don’t Make a Fuss!

Materials: Review Questions for Session 1

Play a game similar to “Red Rover.” Form two teams of kids. Have each team hold hands and stand in a straight line across from each other. One team says, “Don’t make a fuss, let (name) come join us.” Ask the chosen player a review question. If she is correct, she can join the other team. Continue until all the questions have been answered. Say that God chooses people to go and tell others about Him. 

Craft – Name Art

Materials: paper, markersGuide the kids to made decorative posters of their names. Talk about the Bible story as they work. Explain that God chose Paul and Barnabas to go and tell others about Jesus. He can choose anyone with any name to tell others about Jesus.
