Introductory Activity – Full Body Rock/Paper/Scissors
Materials: No supplies needed.
Show kids how to make rock, paper, and scissors with their whole bodies. Rock – crouch into a ball or lean over with hands on knees. Paper – stand straight with legs together and arms at sides. Scissors – stand with legs apart and arms away from sides. Practice jumping twice and then moving into rock position. Repeat jump twice and paper position. Repeat with scissors. Group kids into pairs. Pairs stand facing one another. Say: “Jump, jump, show.” Partners jump twice (on your words) and then show one of the positions. Repeat three times; best of three is the winner. Say: “Switch” and kids change for new partners. Repeat the cycle a few times. Say that people make choices about what to do. Tell them they will hear a story about someone who told the people they had to choose who to worship.
Live It Out
Game – Four in a Row
Materials: Paper (yellow and orange), markers, tape
Create a 6-by-6 grid on the floor with masking tape. Group the kids into teams. Give one team the yellow paper and the other team the orange paper. Tell each child to draw a face or emoji on his paper. Say the Life Point and talk about the Bible story. When kids finish, gather teams around the game grid. Ask the first team a review question. If the answer is correct, the team can place one of their drawings in the grid. Ask the second team a review question. Continue playing the game until one team has four pictures in a row. Remove the pictures and play the game again with additional review questions. Emphasize that people obey God by worshiping only Him.
Craft – Worship Shakers
Materials: paper plates, markers, gravel or beans, ribbon or crepe paper, staplers with staples
Guide kids to draw designs on the backs of the plates. Encourage them to write the Life Point on the backs of the plates, too. Show kids how to staple lengths of ribbon along the edge of the plate. (Staple ends of the ribbon to the front edge of the plate.) When a kid finishes his work, help him scoop a small handful of gravel and put on the front of the plate. He can fold the plate in half, enclosing the gravel inside. Help him staple along the plate edge to seal in the gravel. (Use several staples close together so gravel will not fall out through openings.) Say or sing today’s Bible verse and shake the shakers. Say the Life Point together.
Grades 4-6
Introductory Activity – Name Toss
Materials: tape, plastic plates (several colors)
Use the tape to make the letters E, L, I, J, A, H on the floor at one end of the room. Make a tossing line several feet from the letters.
Guide kids to take turns tossing the plates (like flying disks). They should try to get the plates on the letters. Group the kids into teams. Give each team a different color of plates. Teams can toss plates (one player at a time). The first team to get its color on each letter is the winning team. Tell kids they will hear a powerful story about Elijah today.
Live It Out
Game – Loop the Hoop
Materials: plastic hoops, plastic cones or large plastic cups, tape
Use tape to make a “tossing line” near one end of the game area. Scatter cones throughout the game area, beginning a few feet from the tape line. Lead kids to take turns standing at the tape line and rolling a hoop into the game area, trying to get the hoop to land around a cone. If the hoop lands around a cone, ask a review question. Play the game as one group or create teams. Award points for looping the hoop around a cone and additional points for correct answers to questions. After reviewing the story, tell kids to say the Life Point when their team lands the hoop around a cone.
Craft – Worship Mobile
Materials: orange and yellow construction paper, scissors, hole punches, markers, yarn
Guide a preteen to cut a large flame shape from paper. She can write Worship only God or similar words on the shape. She can cut smaller flame shapes and write words about ways to worship God. Or she can write today’s verse or other worship verses on flame shapes. Tell the kids to punch holes along the bottom of their larger shapes and in the tops of their smaller shapes. They can cut yarn and attach/tie the shapes together to create a mobile. Kids can punch a hole in the top of the larger shape and add a yarn loop for a hanger. Recall the Bible story and note how God showed He is the one true God who people should worship.
