Live It Out
Game – Tabletop Horseshoes
Materials: chenille stems, tape
Bend a stem into an L shape. Tape the shorter leg to a table, with the longer leg sticking up. (This is the goal.) Give each child a chenille stem; tell kids to bend their stems into U shapes. (These are the horseshoes.) Group the kids into teams. Players on each team will take turns tossing the “horseshoes” at the goal. A child can toss his horseshoe and then retrieve it before the next child tosses. If a child gets a horseshoe on the goal, the team receives 5 points; the team can then answer a question for an additional 2 points. Say the Life Point and talk about Joshua and the Israelites obeyed God.
Craft – Obey Coaster
Materials: card stock cut into 6-inch-by-6-inch squares, pencils with intact erasers, washable stamp pads, clear contact plastic, scissors
Give a child a card square. Invite her to press a pencil eraser onto a stamp pad and make circle stamps on the square. She can make the words Obey God on the square out of stamped circles. She can add other colors around the words to create a dotted design. When she completes her design, help her cut two pieces of contact plastic that are slightly larger than the card square. She can attach the contact plastic to both sides of the square to make a coaster. Tell the kids to place their coasters in their homes to remind their families to obey God and follow Him.
Grades 4-6
Introductory Activity – Silent Verse
Materials: paper, marker
Print the words of the verse on paper, one word per page. Create a set of words for each team. Group the kids into teams. Mix a team’s words and hand one word per child. Team members should hold their words facing their bodies. Tell the kids that their teams must put the words in order without speaking. On your signal, kids turn their words facing out; teams work together without speaking to put their words in order of the verse. When a team completes their verse, they hold the words over their heads to indicate they have finished. Tell kids that the people had to do something silently in the Bible story.
Live It Out
Game – Mystery Sentence
Materials: cards or paper squares, marker, tape, paper, pencils
Print these pairs of letters on cards, one pair per card: GO DE XP EC TS PE OP LE TO OB EY HI M. Make a set of cards for each team. Mix each team’s cards; tape the team’s cards to a wall in a group. (Each team will need space to work.)
Group kids into teams and assign each team a group of letters. Give each person on the team a pencil and paper. Tell teams that the letters can be placed in order to create a sentence. The words of the sentence do not have spaces between them. Tell teams that on your signal, they should work to write the sentence in order. Tell teams to start. After a few minutes, if no team can discover the sentence, give a hint or clue about the first card or about the sentence. (It is the Life Point.) Talk about the Life Point and the Bible story. (answer: God expects people to obey Him.)
Craft – 3-D Reminder
Materials: paper, markers, straws, tape, yarn, scissors
Talk about the Bible story and the Life Point. Invite kids to use the materials to create reminders with the words of the Life Point. They can create any type of reminder they choose – a 3-D sculpture or a hanging reminder or another type of reminder. Encourage kids to think of ways that people can obey, respect, and honor God each week.
