Introductory Activity – Choose!
Materials: white, red, yellow, blue, green construction paper; tape; Giant Inflatable Game Cube or medium box
Tape a color of paper (except white) to each wall. Print WILD on two pieces of white paper and slide into the game cube. Slide one of each of the other colors into the game cube. (If using a box, tape the colors and WILD to the sides of the box.)
Tell kids that on your signal they will run to one of the colors. Say: “Go!” and kids run to the walls. Roll the cube. Tell kids standing by the rolled color to stand back in the middle of the room. Call: “Change!” The rest of the kids move to a new color. Roll the cube again and repeat. If you roll WILD, all the kids in the middle are back in the game. After the game, tell kids that they will learn more about making choices and being responsible for their choices.
Live It Out
Game – Back-to-Back Review
No materials needed.
Call out: “Back to back!” Guide pairs of kids to stand back to back. (If you have an odd number of kids, ask an adult to play, too.) Ask a review question. Tell kids to turn and face their partners and tell the answer to the question. Call on a few partners to respond. Then call “Back to back” again and kids move to stand with different partners. Continue to play the game to review the Bible story and the Life Point.
Craft – Do What’s Right Clock
Materials: paper plates, construction paper, markers, brad fasteners, scissors, other art supplies
Talk about the Bible story. Say the Life Point and note that people of God should choose to do what is right at all times. Distribute paper plates and tell kids to print the Life Point on the plate. They can also decorate the plate to look like a clock with numbers or lines. Tell kids to cut arrow shapes from the construction paper and use brads to attach the arrows to the plate. They can move the arrows around like the clock. Provide other art materials to decorate the clocks further.
Grades 4-6
Introductory Activity – Do the Opposite
No supplies needed.
Tell kids to listen to the action you call out and then do the opposite. Say: “Smile!” Wait for the kids to make a frown. Then you frown yourself. Call out other actions for kids to do the opposite: Shout your name; step to the left; raise your right hand; stand up; squat down; touch your toes. To make the game more challenging, give two actions (and kids should do the opposite of both): stand up and cry; touch your left foot with your right hand. Tell kids that in the Bible story today, someone chose to do the opposite of what Jesus said.
Live It Out
Game – Life Point Scramble
Materials: sets of colored paper squares (1 color for each team), marker
Print the words of the Life Point on paper squares, one word per square. Make a set of words for each color of squares. Mix all the words together. Group the kids into teams. Each team should stand at a different side of the game area; assign a color to each team. Stand in the middle of the game area and drop all the words on the floor. On your signal, teams should run to the middle, gather all the squares of their color, and run back to their starting point. Then the team should work together to put the Life Point in order. When the team finished their Life Point, they should stand and shout together: “Do what is right!” Talk about the Bible story and the Life Point.
Craft – Stick Puzzles
Materials: wide craft sticks, masking tape, markers, ziplock bags
Talk about situations or times that kids may be tempted to make wrong choices. Say the Life Point. Give each preteen 4-6 craft sticks. Guide kids to lay the craft sticks side by side, flush at the ends. Help them tape the craft sticks together. A kid can flip over her taped sticks and draw on the sticks. Encourage her to think of a situation that shows her making a right choice. Tell her to place her name or initials on the back of each stick. After the picture is complete, she can remove the tape and mix the sticks. She can reassemble the puzzle. Give her a ziplock bag to store her puzzle. Allow volunteers to tell about the pictures they drew. Repeat the Life Point with kids. They may want to trade puzzles and assemble one another’s puzzle.
