Grades 1–6: Jesus the Teacher — Session 3: Jesus Taught How to Serve (August 17)

Grades 1-3

Introductory Activity – Definition Wall

Materials: large paper, tape, markers

Print What does serve mean? on several pieces of large paper. Tape the paper around the room. Lay markers with each piece of paper. Guide kids to print their ideas or draw pictures of their ideas about serving. Say: “We will talk about serving others today.”

Live It Out

Game – Act It Out

Materials: none

Talk about the Bible story. Say the Life Point. Act out a way to serve other people. Lead kids to guess what you are doing. Choose a child to act out another way to serve. Kids can continue to guess and act out ways to serve. Encourage kids to think of ways they can serve and do those things this week.
Option: Print ideas for serving others on paper slips. Kids can choose slips and act out those ideas.

Craft – Heart Mobile

Materials: construction paper, scissors, hole punches, yarn, markers

Lead each child to cut a large heart from paper. She can print the Life Point on her heart. Talk about ways that people serve others. She can cut more hearts from paper and print ways to serve on them. Tell the kids to punch holes in the bottom of their large hearts and in the tops of the smaller hearts. Then they can use yarn to tie the smaller hearts to the larger ones to create mobiles. Kids may want to punch a hole in the top of the large hearts and add yarn for hangers.

Grades 4-6

Introductory Activity – Sandal Relay

Materials: cardboard, scissors, paper, leather shoelaces or yarn, tape

Trace a foot on cardboard. Cut one or two holes along each edge of the cardboard and string shoelaces through for tying. Make two “sandals” for each team. Mark to ends of the game area with tape. Place the sandals on one end of the game area.
Group kids into two or more teams. Ask teams to line up at the end opposite the sandals. On your signal, the first player of each team runs and picks up the sandals and brings them back to the team. The other players tie the sandals on the first player’s feet. The player wears the sandals, walks back to the opposite line, and takes the sandals off. When the player returns to the team, the next player runs down to get the sandals. Continue until all players have worn the sandals. Tell kids that they will hear a story about a time when Jesus removed the disciples’ sandals.

Live It Out

Game – Word Drop

Materials: craft sticks, different colored markers

Print the words of the Bible Verse on craft sticks, one or two words per stick. Make several sets (at least one for each team), using a different colored marker for each set. Mix all the words together. Group the kids into teams; assign a color to each team (coordinating with the word colors). Hold sticks together a couple of feet from the ground. Drop the sticks into a pile. Give a signal. Team members run to the pile of sticks and find the words of their color and move to the team’s area to assemble the verse in order. The first team to correctly assemble the verse is the winner. Say the verse together. Call attention to the word example. Talk about Jesus’ words regarding serving others. Say the Life Point.

Craft – Design a Shoe

Materials: paper, pencils, markers

Guide the kids to create their own designer shoes. Encourage them to be creative as they draw and color their shoes. As the kids work talk about Bible story and mention that as an example of service Jesus, washed his disciples feet.
