Grades 1-3
Introductory Activity – Name Clap
No materials needed
Guide kids to stand in a circle. Ask each kid to say his name, clapping the syllables as he says it. (For example, “My name is Joseph” with two claps.) After all kids have clapped their names, say: “If your name is (clap, clap), move turn around once.” All kids with two-syllable names should turn around once. Repeat with other movements and number of claps. Say: “Today we will hear about (clap, clap).” (Say Peter’s name or do not tell kids the name to generate interest.)
Live It Out
Game – Gimme a T, Gimme an F
No materials needed
Make statements about the Bible story. Guide kids to use their bodies to make the letter T is the statement is true or F if the statements is false. Kids can lie on the floor to make their letters. They can work alone or with friends to make the letters. After each statement, talk about the answer and guide kids to stand again before making the next statement. Say the Life Point.
Craft – Mosaic Frame
Materials: heavyweight paper, construction paper pieces, glue, markers, scissors
Lead kids to write the Life Point in the middle of the heavyweight paper. Tell kids they can cut smaller pieces of construction paper and glue along the edges to create frames around the words. As they work, recall the Bible story. Talk about the forgiveness Jesus gave to Peter. Stress that every person sins and all people need a Savior to forgive their sins.
Grades 4-6
Introductory Activity – Fingerprint Names
Materials: washable ink pads, white paper, cleaning wipes
Lead kids to press their fingers on the ink pads and press onto paper to make fingerprints. Tell them to create their names with the fingerprints. Say that all people are different but that all people need forgiveness for sin.
Live It Out
Game – Backward Soccer
Materials: two cube tissue boxes; 4 chairs; tape
Reinforce the boxes with tape. Use 2 chairs to make a goal at either end of the game area. Group the kids into two teams and assign goals to the teams. Tell kids they will play backward soccer with square balls. Each team will have a “ball” (box) to try and kick into the goal. They will try to keep the other team from kicking the ball into their goal. All players must move backward and kick the ball with their heels instead of their toes. Line the teams in the middle of the game area with the balls. Start the game. When a team scores a goal, stop play. Ask that team a review question. Award 1 point for the goal; award 2 additional points for a correct answer to the question. Move to the middle of the game area after each goal and start play again.
Craft – Jesus Stones
Materials: large smooth stones, paint pens, wet wipes, paper towels
Give each preteen a stone. Lead kids to clean their stones with the wipes and dry with paper towels. Tell kids to draw pictures about Jesus on one side of the stones. They can write a verse reference about Jesus or about salvation on the back. Talk about the Bible story and the Life Point. Tell kids that every person needs forgiveness for sin. Suggest they place their stones somewhere in their neighborhoods for others to find.
