Introductory Activity – Traffic Sign Matching Game
Materials: cards with traffic signs
Make cards with traffic signs; make two cards for each sign. (For pictures of signs, see http://www.trafficsign.us/.) Mix the signs and lay the cards face down on a table.
Group the kids into two or more teams. Invite players from each team to take turns choose two cards to find matches of signs. When matches are found, remove the cards from the game. Comment that traffic signs help people maneuver safely on the roads. Tell kids that God gave commands to Adam and Eve to help them live in the garden and have a relationship with Him.
Live It Out
Game – Silent Order
Materials: words of the Life Point written on paper, one word per page (one set per team)
Group the kids into two teams. (Create more teams if your group is large.) Hand a set of mixed words to each team. Guide team members to hold the words and stand in a line. On your signal, team members work together silently to put the sentence in order. No team member may speak or make a sound. When a team completes the sentence, members hold the words over their heads (still silent). Talk about the Life Point and the Bible story. Lead kids to thank God for the Savior.
Craft – Diptych
Materials: heavyweight paper, markers, crayons, other art supplies, wide colored tape
Give a child two pieces of paper. Tell him to draw a picture to represent today’s Bible story on one page and to write the Life Point on the other page. When he has completed his work, help him lay the pages side by side, face down. Use tape to connect the two pieces of paper along a side. Fold the pages together to crease the tape. Open and stand the diptychs on a table. Talk about God’s plan to send a Savior.
Extend the activity: Provide third piece of paper for the kids to draw present-day pictures related to the Bible story and the Life Point. They can add their third pictures with tape in a similar manner to create a triptych.
Grades 4-6
Introductory Activity – I’ve Done That
Materials: masking tape
Use tape to create a line across the middle of the play area. Lead kids to stand on the tape line. Make a statement, such as “I have been to Disney World.” Kids who have done that should take one step forward; those who have not should take one step backward. In your statements, include both positive and not so positive actions. Continue the game for several minutes or until someone reaches one end of the play area. Comment that everyone has made right choices and wrong choices. Tell kids that today they will hear about choices that Adam and Eve made and the consequences of those choices.
Live It Out
Game – Shifting Gameboard
Materials: self-stick notes, marker, buttons or other game pieces, numbered cube, timer
Lead kids to use 30 self-stick notes to make a trail gameboard on a table. They can arrange the trail in any configuration they choose. Lead them to draw a star on at least 5 of the self-stick notes along the trail. Set timer for 15-30 seconds.
Group the kids into teams. Each team can take a turn rolling the cube and moving a button along the trail. (Start the timer when the first team rolls to begin the game.) If a team lands on a star, ask a review question for the team to answer. When the timer sounds, the team with the cube rolls it and moves that many self-stick notes from the start of the trail to the end of the trail (shifting the finish of the game). After the spaces have been shifted, reset and restart the timer and game play continues. At the end of the game, talk about the Life Point with kids.
Craft – Tape Resist Painting
Materials: paper, finger paint (or paint and paintbrushes), easy-release tapeTalk about the Bible story and the Life Point. Lead kids to think about a simple symbol that would remind them of the story and Life Point. Invite kids to create their symbols on a piece of paper with the tape. Press the edges of the tape to the paper. Kids can fingerpaint over the paper and tape. After a kid is finished painting and washes her hands, she can carefully remove the tape to reveal the design.
