Introductory Activity – Musical Hoops
Materials: plastic hoops, music
Lay the hoops on the floor around the game area. Play music and lead kids to walk around and among the hoops. Stop the music. Tell kids that everyone should stand in a hoop (at least one foot in a hoop). Play a couple of rounds. Remove at least 2 hoops. Play a few more rounds. Remove more hoops. Continue until you have only 1-2 hoops for all the kids to use. Comment that the kids gathered all together. Today they will think about gathering together for worship.
Live It Out
Game – Verse Search
Materials: paper squares with the words of the verse, one word per square
Hide the verse words around the room. Tell kids that they will search the room and find the words of the verse. As they find the words, they should bring the words to the middle of the room. When all the words are found, lead the kids to work together to put the verse in order. Say the verse together. Ask kids to talk about how the verse relates to the Life Point. Talk about the Bible story. Say that family members today can serve and worship God together, too.
Note: To play this game as teams, make a set of verse words, each set on a different color of paper, and hide all the sets around the room. Assign each team a color and tell team members that they can only collect words of their designated color. Teams bring their cards to a designated team area and put the verse in order.
Craft – Family Worship Cards
Materials: large blank index cards, markers
Lead kids to write Family Worship Card at the top of their cards. They can draw seven squares or spaces along the bottom of the card. Tell kids to draw designs around the cards. They can write the Life Point on the backs of their cards. Tell kids that in this month, they can punch a hole or check each space when they worship God at home. Encourage them to talk with their families about times and ways they could worship as a family together. Pray and ask God to help families worship together this month.
Grades 4-6
Introductory Activity – Verse Clip-up
Materials: clothespins, clothes hanger (one per team), permanent marker
Write the words of the Bible verse on clothespins, one word per clothespin. Make a set of clothespin words for each team.
Group kids into two (or more) teams. Give each team a hanger and a set of clothespins. On your signal, teams work to clip the verse in order on the hanger. Replay the game as time permits. Ask kids to tell you what the verse means. Tell kids that today they will think about ways their families can serve and worship God together.
Live It Out
Game – Life Point Scramble
Materials: sets of colored paper squares (1 color for each team), marker
Write the words of the Life Point on paper squares. Make a set of words for each color of squares. Mix all the words together. Group the kids into teams. Each team should stand at a different side of the game area; assign a color to each team. Stand in the middle of the game area and drop all the words on the floor. On your signal, teams should run to the middle, gather all the squares of their color, and run back to their starting point. Then the team should work together to put the Life Point in order. When the team finished their Life Point, they should stand and shout together: “Worship!” Talk about the Bible story and the Life Point.
Craft – Clay Reminder
Materials: air-dry clay, small craft sticks, beads, clay tools (optional)
You can purchase air-dry clay or make it. To make it: Combine 2 cups baking soda, 1 cup cornstarch, and 1½ cups cold water in a pan and stir until smooth. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly. Bring to a boil and continue to cook and stir until the mixture is the consistency of mashed potatoes. Remove from the pan and set aside; cover it with a damp towel and let it cool completely. Knead it until smooth. Store in airtight container. This recipe makes about 2 pounds of clay.
Give a kid a small ball of clay. She can press the clay into a flat shape. She can use the tools to shape the clay and make lined designs in the clay. Craft sticks can also be used to shape and mark the clay. She can press beads in the clay for additional designs. Suggest kids write Worship God as part of their design. Tell kids to place their reminder in a place to air dry for several hours. Then they can place it in their gardens or on a table in the family area to remind the family that they can serve and worship God together. Say the Life Point.
