Introductory Activity – If You Have
No materials needed.
Gather kids in the middle of the space. Say: “Today we are going to talk about families again. Let’s think about our families. If you have a brother, touch something red. If you have no sisters, touch something blue. If you have only older brothers and sisters (you are the youngest), touch something white.” Continue to call out various family configurations. Here are other ideas: all sisters, only one sister, no brothers or sisters, a brother or sister in high school, a brother or sister who is a baby, both a brother and a sister. Tell kids that in today’s Bible story, the family has two sisters and a brother.
Live It Out
Game – Blow the Life Point
Materials: thin craft foam, permanent marker, scissors, straws (one per kid)
Cut craft foam into small rectangles. Write each word of the Life Point on a rectangle. Make several sets of words. Scatter each set of words on a different table (or opposite ends of tables).
Group kids into groups, one group for each set of words. Give each kid a straw. Lead each group to stand around the set of words. On your signal, the groups should work together to blow the Life Point words around the table and put the words in order. When a group blows all the words into order, they should stand and shout “Yes!” Talk about the Bible story and the Life Point. Help kids begin to understand how people can choose to trust Jesus.
Craft – Trust Wristband
Materials: cardboard tubes, colored tape, scissors, permanent markers
Cut a slit from one end of the tube to the other. Cut pieces of the tube that measure about 2-3 inches wide. Invite a child to use the tape to cover a cardboard wristband. When the wristband is covered, lead kids to use tape pieces or permanent markers to spell out trust. Say the Life Point. Talk about the Bible story and how the sisters trusted Jesus.
Grades 4-6
Introductory Activity – Life Point Roundabout
Materials: words of the Life Point on paper squares, one word per page; tape
Tape the words around the room in a mixed order. Words should be on all the walls or different areas of the room. (Tape words to chairs if unable to use the walls.) Guide kids to stand in the middle of the room. Read the words around the room. Tell kids that the words can be put in order to make a sentence; the sentence is today’s Life Point. Tell kids to move to the word that they think is the first word. After a few seconds, say the first word and lead all kids to stand at that word. Lead them to determine the second word, and so on. After all the words have been identified in order, lead kids to move back to the middle of the room. Say the Life Point and guide kids to move quickly from word to word. Tell kids that they will hear about someone who had to trust Jesus.
Live It Out
Game – Shifting Gameboard
Materials: sticky notes, marker, buttons or other game pieces, numbered cube, timer
Lead kids to use 30 sticky notes to make a trail gameboard on a table. They can arrange the trail in any configuration they choose. Lead them to draw a star on at least 5 of the notes along the trail. Set timer for 15-30 seconds.
Group the kids into teams. Each team can take a turn rolling the cube and moving a button along the trail. (Start the timer when the first team rolls to begin the game.) If a team lands on a star, ask a review question for the team to answer. When the timer sounds, the team with the cube rolls it and moves that many sticky notes from the start of the trail to the end of the trail (shifting the finish of the game). After the spaces have been shifted, reset and restart the timer and game play continues. At the end of the game, talk about the Life Point with kids.
Craft – Washer Necklace
Materials: large metal washers, thin-line permanent markers, baker’s twine or leather shoe lacing
Give each preteen a washer. Guide kids to write Trust Jesus on the washers. They can also draw designs on their washers. Cut lengths of twine or lacing, about 3 feet per kid. Assist kids in folding the twine in half, inserting the folded end through the opening in the washer, and pulling the ends of the twine through the loop. Tie the ends to make a necklace. Talk about the Bible story and the Life Point.
Options: Use nail polish or stickers to decorate the washers. Use plastic lacing or yarn for the necklace.
