Grades 1–6: God Is — Session 1: God Protected Moses (September 7)

Grades 1-3

Introductory Activity – Pharaoh Says

Materials: masking tape

Use tape to divide the play area into two (or more) sections. Group kids into two groups, one in each section. (Groups do not need to be equal numbers.) Play “Pharaoh Says” like “Simon Says.” Give kids an action; they do it if you include “Pharaoh says” and do not do it if you do not include those words. Say: “Pharaoh says, ‘Hop three times.’ Pharaoh says, ‘Clap once.’ Stand on one foot.” If any kids stand on one foot, they must move to the other section. If you have a large group of kids, create separate groups, each group with a “pharaoh.” Tell the kids that in today’s story, Pharaoh gave commands that endangered God’s people.

Live It Out

Game – Cup Stack

Materials: plastic cups, white labels, marker

Print the words of the Life Point on the labels, one word per label. Make two sets of words. Attach each word to a cup; place the labels for the same word on both sides of the cup, placing one upside down and one right side up.
On your signal, kids will work together to stack the words of the Point in order. Suggest they place the first word on the bottom and build up in order. Guide them to alternate orientation of the cups, standing the first one right side up and the next upside down (with openings together). The third cup can stand right side up (with cup bottoms together). Repeat until the Life Point is in order from bottom to top. Challenge the kids to build it with the last word on the bottom, building so that the Point reads top down when complete. Talk about how God showed His control of all things in the Bible story. (Note: For larger groups of kids, create two or more sets of cups for stacking.)

Craft – Basket Reminder

Materials: craft sticks, thin-line markers, glue, yarn, scissors (optional)

Talk about the Bible story and say the Life Point. Encourage the kids to talk about how God showed His power. Lead kids to print the words of the Life Point (or the weekly verse) on craft sticks. Suggest they print a couple of words on each stick. Tell kids to use the craft sticks (both those with words and those without) and glue to create basket shapes. If you choose, provide yarn for kids to weave through spaces between the sticks. Tell kids to place their baskets somewhere at home to remind them and their families that God is in control of all things.

Grades 4-6

Introductory Activity – Whaddya Know?

Materials: large piece of paper, markers, tape

Tape or lay large pieces of paper around the area. On each paper, print a subject (the moon, apples, your state or city, soccer). Choose subjects that interest your kids. Lay markers near the paper. Tell the kids to write what they know about the subject on the paper. Encourage them to fill up the page as much as possible. They can talk together to generate more facts. Tell the kids that today they will talk about what God knows.

Live It Out

Game – Hide the Baby Relay

Materials for each team: 4 paper plates (or pieces of paper), a baby doll, and a blanket (Plan for at least two teams, with a different color plate or paper for each team.)

Place one paper plate for each team at the starting point. Space the other three plates across the room to create one relay course for a team. Group the kids into teams. Gather each team at its starting point. Tell kids how to run the relay: “The first team member will wrap the doll in the blanket and carry the doll to the first plate and lay the doll on that space. That team member will return and tag next member in line. The second team member will run to the doll, pick it up, run to the second plate, place it there, and return. The third team member will run to the doll, pick it up, run to the third plate, place it there, and return. The next team member will run to the doll, pick it up, return to the starting point with the doll, and hand off the doll to the next member. The next team members will repeat the pattern. Teams will continue until all members have a turn. The last team member will bring the doll back to the start point to end the relay.” Run the relay. Talk about the Bible story and discuss how the family hid their baby. Talk about how God showed He was in control of all things. Repeat the Life Point. As time allows, mix teams and run the relay again, or ask kids to develop another way to use the materials to run the relay.

Craft – Folding Reminder

Materials: wide craft sticks (6 for each kid), wide masking tape, permanent markers, chenille stems (optional)

Say the Life Point with the kids. Talk about how the Bible story shows that God is in control of all things. Give each kid 6 craft sticks. Lead kids to lay their sticks side by side in pairs and use a piece of wide tape to attach each pair together. Tell kids to turn over the pairs of sticks and lay all the pairs side by side. Use tape to attach the first and second pair together (taping the second stick of one pair to the first stick of the other pair). Repeat with the last pair, attaching it to the second pair. Provide markers for the kids to write the Life Point on the sticks, one or two words per stick (or however they choose to write the words). Tell the kids that God is knows all about them; He is in control of all things today. When complete, lead the kids to fanfold the sticks on the tape. Tell them to place the sticks in a place that reminds them that God is all-knowing and in control. 
Option: Fold or bend a chenille stem, taping each end to the top stick to make a hanger.
