Grades 1–6: God is in Control — Session 3: God Chose a King (June 16)

Grades 1-3

Introductory Activity – Double Name

Materials: no materials needed

Sit in a circle with the kids. Lead the kids in a slap/clap rhythm: slap knees twice, clap hands twice. Repeat the rhythm a few times in a steady beat. Say your name twice as you slap your knees; then say a kid’s name twice as you clap. That kid says his name twice on the slaps and another kid’s name on the claps. Continue until a kid misses saying his name or another’s name. Start the beat again as time allows. Say: “Today the people wanted a king and God gave them the name of the person to be king.”

Game – Tic-Tac-Toe Toss

Materials: Masking tape, beanbags, two colors of paper (5 sheets each)

Create a tic-tac-toe board on the floor with tape. Mark a tossing line a few feet from the board. Group the kids into two teams. Assign each team on of the colors of paper.
A player from Team 1 tosses the beanbag on the tic-tac-toe board. Ask the team a review question. If they answer correctly, they can place a piece of paper in the square where the beanbag landed. If the answer is incorrect, nothing is placed in the square. A player from Team 2 has an opportunity to toss the beanbag into a square. Continue until one team gets three squares in a row. Say the Life Point together.

Craft – Foil Crown

Materials: Craft foam, aluminum foil tape, scissors, pens

Guide kids to cut crown shapes from the craft foam. (You may want to create templates of crowns on heavyweight paper; kids can trace the templates on foam and cut out the crowns.) Help kids cut lengths of foil tape and carefully wrap the tape around the foam crowns. When a kid completes wrapping his crown, guide him to use a pen to engrave the words God gives authority. on the crown. He can add other designs around the words. Talk about the Bible story and the Life Point.

Grades 4-6

Introductory Activity – Reveal the Kings

Materials: deck of cards

Pull the four kings from the deck of cards. Lay the kings face up on a table. Lay the other cards, face down, to cover the kings. Lead the kids to take turns blowing the cards off the table to show the kings. They should not blow the kings from the table. (Set up several stations with a deck of cards at each station to involve more kids at a time.) Say: “Today God revealed who would be the first king of Israel.”

Game – Review Game

Materials: toy crown

Form the kids into two groups. Line the teams up on the opposite sides of the room. In the middle of the room, place a toy crown. Explain that you will ask review questions from today’s session and the previous sessions. The first team that sends someone to the crown, places it on his or her head, and answers the question correctly receives a point. The team with the most points at the end of the game is the winner!

Craft – Washer Necklace

Materials: large metal washers, thin-line permanent markers, baker’s twine or leather shoe lacing

Give each kid a washer. Guide kids to print God’s Authority on the washers. They can also draw designs on their washers. Cut lengths of twine or lacing, about 3 feet per kid. Assist kids in folding the twine in half, inserting the folded end through the opening in the washer, and pulling the ends of the twine through the loop. Tie the ends to make a necklace. Talk about the Bible story and the Life Point.
Options: Use nail polish or stickers to decorate the washers. Use plastic lacing or yarn for the necklace.
