Grades 1–6: God Does Amazing Things — Session 1: Moses and the Burning Bush (October 6)

Grades 1-3

Introductory Activity – Weekly Verse Challenge

Materials: index cards, envelope

Before class, write the Weekly Verse on index cards, one word per card. Jumble the cards and place them in an envelope. In class, write blanks on the board that match how many words are in the Weekly Verse. Read and say the Weekly Verse with the kids. Gather the kids and place the envelope on the floor. Choose one child to pull out a card and fill in the correct blank on the board. If the blank is incorrect, encourage the next child you choose to correct it before selecting a card. Once completed, say the Weekly Verse together.

Game – Moses Tag

Materials: no materials needed

Clear a large space in your room or go outdoors. Ask for two volunteers—one to represent Moses and the other to represent “Fear.” Inform the children they will play tag, and if Fear touches them, they must freeze. Moses will run around and “unfreeze” people by touching them and saying, “God will do what He says.” If Fear tags Moses, then the round is over. Choose other kids to be Moses and Fear and play multiple rounds. Read the Weekly Verse and remind the children that God always honors His promises.

Craft – Burning Bush

Materials: construction paper (green, orange, red, blue), scissors, glue, markers

Give each child a piece of construction paper in each color and ensure they have access to the other supplies. Instruct them to draw and cut out a bush from the green paper. Next, direct them to draw and cut out fire from the orange and red paper. Direct them to glue their bush and fire to the blue construction paper. Instruct them to write the Weekly Verse at the top of the page.

Grades 4-6

Introductory Activity – Promises Memory Game

Materials: index cards, pen

Before class, write down promises from God on index cards, putting one promise on each card. Make two sets. In class, lay the cards on the floor in a grid. Form two teams with the kids. Tell the teams they will take turns turning over two cards at a time. If they find the same promise, they get to keep the cards. The teams will alternate until all the cards have been picked up. Write the Weekly Verse on the board and say it together.
Possible promises to write on the index cards:
HEBREWS 13:5 – “…I WILL NEVER LEAVE YOU OR ABANDON YOU.”
PHILIPPIANS 4:19 – “AND MY GOD WILL SUPPLY ALL YOUR NEEDS ACCORDING TO HIS RICHES IN GLORY IN CHRIST JESUS.
JOHN 14:27 – “PEACE I LEAVE WITH YOU. MY PEACE I GIVE TO YOU. I DO NOT GIVE TO YOU AS THE WORLD GIVES. DON’T LET YOUR HEART BE TROUBLED OR FEARFUL.
1 JOHN 1:9 – “IF WE CONFESS OUR SINS, HE IS FAITHFUL AND RIGHTEOUS TO FORGIVE US OUR SINS AND TO CLEANSE US FROM ALL UNRIGHTEOUSNESS.

Game – Staff Relay

Materials: cardboard tubes from wrapping paper

Form two teams with the kids and line them up next to each other in an open area in your room or go outdoors. Give the child at the front of each team a cardboard tube representing Moses’ staff. Tell the children they will run with Moses’ staff to a spot of your choosing and back to the team. They will hand the tube to the next person in line, who will repeat the process. The first team to finish the relay is the winner! Remind kids that God did what He said He would do for Moses. Say the Weekly Verse together.

Craft – Door Knob Reminder

Materials: heavyweight paper, markers, stickers, ribbon, glue, collage materials, scissors

Lead kids to cut circles or other shapes from heavyweight paper. Help a preteen cut a length of ribbon, fold it, and glue the ends to the back of her shape to create a hanger. Tell her to print the Life Point in the middle of the shape. She can use the art materials to decorate around the question. Talk about the Bible story and the Life Point. Suggest kids print the Weekly Verse on the backs of their shapes. Tell kids to hang the reminder on the doorknobs to their rooms. They will be reminded to about God’s promises when they see the doorknob reminder.
