Grades 1-3
Introductory Activity – May I?
No materials needed
Tell kids that they will play a game. You will call out actions for them to do but before doing them they must ask “May I?” and wait for the response “Yes you may.” If someone does the action without asking the question, he is out. Call a child and give an action. Wait for the question and give the response. Continue calling names and giving actions. Play for a few minutes. Call the “out” kids back into the game and restart play. Comment that God helps people know what to do and how to avoid temptation.
Live It Out
Game – It Could Be Trouble
Materials: large piece of paper, self-stick notes, marker, pen
Print It Could Be Trouble on the large piece of paper with a marker. Using the pen, write positive and negative numbers on the sticky side/back side of the notes. (For example, +2, -1, +5, -5, etc.) Make 10-15 (or at least one note per child) notes. Stick the notes to the large piece of paper. (The visible side will be blank.)
Group kids into teams if you choose or play as one large team. Ask a child a review question. If she answers the question correctly, she goes to the poster and pulls a note. Give or take away points as shown on the note. After you have completed the game, comment that kids didn’t know if they would get something good or something that was trouble. Say the Life Point. Tell kids that God helps people know what is trouble and temptation. God can help people resist temptation.
Craft – Corner Bookmark
Materials: envelopes, scissors, decorative tape
Help a child cut the corner from an envelope; cut diagonally across the envelope about 1/2 inch from the corner. Lead the child to use decorative tape to cover both sides of the triangle bookmark. Make sure to leave the long end open. As kids work, talk about the Bible story. Say the Life Point and talk about what kids have learned about Jesus and His example from Bible. Show kids how to slide the bookmark over the corner of a page to mark pages. Suggest kids use their bookmarks in their Bibles to mark where they are reading or to mark today’s Bible verse.
Grades 4-6
Introductory Activity – Mind Map
Materials: large piece of paper (or white board), markers
Print temptation in a circle in the middle of paper. Guide kids to create a mind map of what they know about temptation. As they mention ideas and concepts, draw lines from the center circle and write words about what they know. Connect ideas as they mention them. Tell kids that they will learn more about temptation and resisting temptation.
Live It Out
Game – Verse Roundabout
Materials: verse printed on large piece of paper or a white board (optional)
Guide kids to stand in a circle. Choose someone to start the game. She looks to her right and says the first word of the verse. The next person looks right and says the second word. Continue around the circle. If a word is missed, the direction reverses and kids will look left as they continue the verse. Repeat the verse a few times. Talk about the Life Point and encourage kids to talk about how Jesus resisted temptation.
Craft – Hand Puppet
Materials: 1-inch Styrofoam balls (2 per child), chenille stems, glue, scissors, wiggle eyes
Cut the chenille stems into 3-inch pieces. Help a child form a piece of chenille stem into a U shape. She can put glue on each end of the chenille stem U and press the end into a foam ball. Lead the child to glue a wiggle eye onto each foam ball to make large eyes. She may want to glue other pieces of chenille stem on top of the balls to be eyelashes. Show her how to slide the chenille stem U onto her middle finger so the eyes sit on the back of her hand. Now her hand is a puppet; she can open and close her thumb and fingers to open and close the puppet’s “mouth.”
Talk about times kids need to think about what Jesus said and did. Say the Life Point. If time allows, children may enjoy acting out situations with their puppets that show how to say no to temptation or how to make right choices.
