Grades 1–6: Families Help — Session 3: Hannah’s Family Worshiped God (July 20)

Grades 1-3

Introductory Activity – Time to Worship

Materials: rhythm instruments, Music

Allow the kids to play rhythm instruments as you lead them to sing worship songs. Ask them to share ways they worship with their families. Say that today they will hear a Bible story about a woman who worshiped with her family.

Live It Out

Game – Beach Ball Volley

Materials: beachball

Guide the kids to volley the beachball keeping it in the air until you say, “Freeze.” The child with the ball should hold it as you talk. Each time you freeze, ask the child holding the ball to name a way he can worship God, such as “We can worship the Lord by praying.” Say the Life Point together and continue to play as time allows.

Craft – Bible Verse Poster

Materials: paper, crayons, markers, decorative stickers

Write the Weekly Verse, Psalm 95:6, on a sheet of paper and make a copy for each child. Give each child a Bible verse page. Read aloud the verse to the kids. Guide the kids to decorate their poster. As the kids work talk about different ways to worship the Lord. Ask the kids to talk about ways they worship with their families.

Grades 4-6

Introductory Activity – Look and Talk

Materials: several items used for worship (hymnal, a prayer list, a worship bulletin, small musical instruments, etc.)

Allow the kids to examine the different items you have gathered. Talk about how each one is used to help us worship the Lord. Talk about different ways to worship and explain that all these items are just tools to help us worship. True worship comes from our hearts.

Live It Out

Game – Worship Stacker

Materials: toothpicks, 5/8-inch metal nuts

Form three equal teams with your kids. Give each team one toothpick and multiple metal nuts. Tell them they are going to stack the metal nuts into a tower using their toothpick. They must be stacked on their edge, not flat. The kids must take turns stacking the nuts, and as each child places a nut on the tower, they must state one reason why God should be worshiped. The team with the highest tower wins! Afterwards, give each team the opportunity to share reasons why God should be worshiped. Explain that they should not only worship God at church, but at home, as well. Say that God wants families to worship together to grow their faith. Repeat the Life Point together.

Craft – Prayers to God

Materials: paper, pencils

Give each child a piece of paper and a pencil. Tell your kids that they are going to pray just like Hannah prayed to God, and that they are going to write down their prayers. Write some prompts on the board to help them know how to pray. After the kids write down their prayers, ask for volunteers who would like to read their prayers out loud. Have everyone read the Weekly Verse together. Pray for each child before he leaves.
Possible Prayer Prompts: God, help me with… ; God, please provide… ; God, show me how to… ; God, forgive me for…
