Introductory Activity – Pick and Talk
Materials: bag; several items for helping around the house like: small hand broom, dish towel, small garden shovel, etc.
Gather the kids and allow one child at a time to close their eyes and pick an item from the bag. Ask the child how she could use that item to help her family. Say that they will hear a Bible story about a man who helped his family.
Live It Out
Game – Across the Minefield
Materials: masking tape, cups, blindfolds
Section off a square area in your classroom using tape. Place cups throughout the square that will represent mines. Place the kids into two different teams and instruct each team to stand on opposite sides of the square. Each team will have a volunteer stand outside of the square who will verbally guide their blindfolded teammates through the minefield. If a student steps on a cup they must start over. The team who makes it through the minefield first wins! Lead everyone to say the Weekly Verse, Philippians 2:4. Explain that God wants people to love, help, and protect each other, like they helped their teammates through the minefield.
Craft – Help Each Other
Materials: paper, crayons, colored pencils
Place the crayons on one end of the table, the paper in the middle and the colored pencils on the other end, or place items on different tables if you have more than one table. Explain that the kids should draw pictures of their families working together. As they draw, they also must work together to pass the supplies to each other as needed. If someone needs a red crayon the child next to the crayons will find it and pass it down the line. Talk about the Bible story and the ways Joseph helped his family. Say the Life point together.
Grades 4-6
Introductory Activity – Gathering Grain
Materials: yellow paper cut into thin strips
Scatter the strips of yellow paper around the room. Explain the strips represent stalks of grain. When you say go the kids are to gather as many stalks of grain as they can. You may want allow the kids to scatter and gather the grain several times. Tell the kids that today’s Bible story is about a man who helped his family have food. Say the Life Point together.
Live It Out
Game –Ball Pass
Materials: tennis balls
Place your students in a circle. Give a tennis ball to a child and explain that she is to toss the ball across the circle. The ball should keep being tossed around the circle. After a few moments, introduce a second tennis ball for them to toss across the circle. Keep adding tennis balls and see how many the group can keep moving until one is dropped. Afterwards, lead everyone in saying the Life Point. Explain that God’s plan for families is for everyone can work together to glorify God. Say the Weekly Verse, Philippians 2:4, with the kids.
Craft – Grain Art
Materials: white paper, yellow paper cut into thin strips, glue sticks, markers, picture of wheat growing in a fieldGuide the kids to make a work of art depicting a field of wheat. They can glue the strips of paper to their page or draw wheat. Remind them Joseph helped his family by giving them grain for food. Say the Life Point.
