Grades 1-3
Introductory Activity – Storm Supplies
Materials: digital device, storm sounds
Before class, download a sound machine app to your phone and search for a storm sound. In class, play the storm sound and tell the kids to pretend a big storm is coming. Ask: “What supplies would we need to prepare for a big storm?” Write all of their answers on the board. Afterward, tell the kids that the disciples experienced a big storm in today’s lesson, and they only have one thing to help them— Jesus.
Live It Out
Game – Over and Under Relay
Materials: index cards, marker, tape, beach ball (one per team, if teams are used)
Print the words of the Life Point on cards, one word per card. If you choose to play with teams, create a set of words for each team. Tape the words on a wall at one end of the play area.
Talk about the Bible story and say the Life Point together. Create two teams. Guide each team to stand in a line, one behind the other. Hand the ball to the first kid in line. When you say go, the first kid should hand the ball over his head to the kid behind him. The second kid should hand the ball between her legs to the kid behind her. The kids should continue to pass the ball over and under to the end of the line. The last kid in line runs to the wall of word cards, chooses the first word in the Life Point, and runs back the line. She places the card in a specified place, stands at the front of the line, and passes the ball over her head. Continue the game until the Life Point is completed in order. Ask kids to thank God for Jesus.
Craft – Stormy Seas
Materials: brown, black, blue, white, and tan construction paper; scissors, glue, marker
Give the kids one sheet of each color of construction paper. Ensure they have access to the other supplies. Tell them to imagine Jesus and the disciples experiencing the storm in the boat at night. Direct them to create that scene by cutting out the ship, people, and water from the different colors of paper. Tell them to glue the items to the black sheet of paper to create the scene. Direct them to write the Life Point on the boat. Allow several volunteers to share their pictures with the class.
Grades 4-6
Introductory Activity – Name Toss
Materials: painters tape, plastic plates (several colors)
Use the tape to make the letters J, E, S, U, S on the floor at one end of the room. Make a tossing line several feet from the letters.
Guide kids to take turns tossing the plates (like flying disks). They should try to get the plates on the letters. Group the kids into teams. Give each team a different color of plates. Teams can toss plates (one player at a time). The first team to get its color on each letter is the winning team. Tell kids they will hear a story about Jesus today.
Live It Out
Game – Run and Write
Materials: paper, tape
Tape a piece of paper to the wall, one paper per team. The paper should be at kids’ eye level.
Group the kids into teams. Teams should stand in line, one behind the other, facing their paper. Hand the first player on each team a marker. At your signal, the players step to the paper, write down something that Jesus did, step back to the line, and hand off the marker to the next player. Guide kids to write different things on their papers. After all players have written, talk about the things that kids wrote. Lead kids to pray and thank God for the amazing things Jesus did.
Craft – Boats of Faith
Materials: aluminum foil, straws, tape, permanent markersGive every child a piece of aluminum foil and a few straws. Ensure they have access to tape, as well. Tell them to write the Life Point on the aluminum foil. Direct them to build a boat using the materials they’ve been given. After everyone has finished their boats, tell them to take them home and put them in the water to see if they will float. Encourage them to report next week whether their boat sank or floated. Say the Life Point together.
