Grades 1–3
Introductory Activity— Telephone
Materials: music
Play a game of telephone! Using the following funny phrases, line kids up and start at one end of the group. Kids should whisper the phrase to the next child while music is playing in the background for extra challenge. The last kid says the phrase out loud to see if everyone guessed it correctly. The last phrase should be today’s Life Point. Tell kids that like they sent the message down the line, God sends the Holy Spirit to believers!
• A chicken quesadilla with extra creamy jalapeño sauce.
• The best chips are chocolate ones.
• Don’t move! There’s a gigantic spider behind you!
• Orange you glad I didn’t say banana?
• Let’s learn this lesson’s Life Point.
• God sends the Holy Spirit to believers!
Live It Out
Game— Act Out the Story
Materials: Bible times dress up items (optional)
Create two teams. Allow teams five minutes to assign roles and practice acting out the Bible story. When the five minutes are up, each team can present their drama to the other. Remind the kids that Peter and John had the power of the Holy Spirit, who helps people tell others about Jesus.
Craft— The Greatest Gift
Materials: pop-up gift boxes, markers, gift bows or ribbon, glue, craft gems, any other decorating supplies you have on hand
Give each kid a gift box, and encourage them to decorate it so that it looks like the greatest gift box of all time! They can make it sparkle or write or draw whatever they would like on it. They can even put bows or ribbon on it. Tell kids that this gift box represents the fact that God sent the greatest gift of all time to believers: the Holy Spirit!
Grades 4–6
Introductory Activity— Share about Your Favorite Gift
Materials: none
Gather kids together and ask them the following questions: What was the best gift you ever received? Why did you get that gift? Why do you still think it’s the best gift?
Transition to the next set of questions: What kind of gifts does God give people? Do you remember what gift God gave believers after Jesus went back to heaven?
Say the Life Point together.
Live It Out
Game— Stick Drop
Materials: craft sticks, different colored markers
Print the words of the Bible verse on craft sticks, one word per stick. Make several sets (at least one for each team), each using a different colored marker. Mix all the sticks together. Group the kids into teams then assign a color to each team (coordinating with the word colors). Hold sticks together a couple of feet from the ground. Drop the sticks into a pile. Give a signal. Team members will run to the pile of sticks and find the words of their color and move to the team’s area to assemble the verse in order. The first team to correctly assemble the verse is the winner. Say the verse together. Say the Life Point.
Craft— Life Point Reminder
Materials: white construction paper, white crayons, watercolor paints, cups of water, paintbrushes, tablecloth or drop cloth
Talk about the Bible story and say the Life Point. Guide kids to print the Life Point on a piece of white construction paper with a white crayon. They can add other designs, too. Then allow them to paint over the paper with watercolors. The LifePoint will shine through the watercolors! Talk about how God sends the Holy Spirit to believers, and how He helps us share the good news of Jesus with others.
