EXTRA! Ideas for Adults – Living a Godly Life in an Ungodly World – Session 2

July 15, 2019 By Amber Vaden 7 Comments

Date: July 28

Depend on God

The Point: God is greater than any challenge we face.

Get Into the Study

Use the following information to introduce Question #1.

In February 2019, the J.D. Power marketing research company released its annual report on the most dependable cars. For this year’s study, they looked at 2016 model year cars and tracked their dependability. Their survey showed that Lexus is the most dependable brand (for the eighth consecutive year). Porsche and Toyota tied for second. Chevrolet and Buick ranked fourth and fifth.

Say: All of us can probably think of some “dependable” and “not-so-dependable” items we have owned. Then call attention to Question #1 (What’s the most dependable thing you’ve owned?) and invite volunteers to respond.

Get Into the Study (Option)

Use the following optional activity to introduce today’s session.

In advance, prepare to play the song or video “How Great Is Our God,” written by Chris Tomlin, Jesse Reeves and Ed Cash. You may also enlist a volunteer to lead the group in singing along. Afterwards, invite sentence praises to honor God for being greater than any of our difficulties.

This idea supports the teaching plan found in the Bible Studies for Life: Adult Leader Guide.

Study the Bible

Use the following information to supplement Question #4.

On Wednesday night, June 19, the Highland Terrace Baptist Church in Greenville, TX, decided to cancel its evening activities. Severe weather was present in the area, and the senior pastor Chet Haney decided it was safest for the congregation to stay home. Just moments after he called off the activities, the storm with its straight-line winds hit the church. “We were just about to go in there for our Wednesday night service,” Haney said. “The front quarter of the sanctuary was peeled off by the high wind. The whole altar area is basically exposed to the sunshine. Part of the roof that blew off landed on another part of our building and demolished some of our Sunday School space like a missile hit it.” It was estimated that the straight-line winds reached speeds of over 100 mph. “Two days ago, life was normal — whatever that is,” Haney said. “Now, we’re kind of in chaos, but God’s been moving and we’ve been seeing a lot of blessings in the midst of this.”

Say: Even as they recover from the terrible storm destruction, this congregation can see evidence of God’s blessings. Then call attention to Question #4 (When has God greatly blessed you through a crisis?) and invite volunteers to respond.

On page 113 of the teacher’s guide, it says “A link to the video may be found at biblestudiesforlife.com/adultextra.” This is just after suggesting the song”How Great is Our God.” There is no link to the video of the song.
