Why We Need God’s Word
The Point: The Bible reveals everything we need to live victoriously.
Get Into the Study
Use the following information to introduce Question #1.
In years past, the popular LEGO building sets have come with a paper manual, giving detailed, step-by-step instructions for assembling that particular set. However, some of the newest LEGO sets now being released have gotten rid of the paper instruction manual. Instead these new sets (part of the LEGO CITY missions sets), provide an interactive story that the user can access through a smartphone or tablet. The story and other information, available on the LEGO app, guides the user through building the set.
Say: If you (or your children) are LEGO fans, maybe you’ve counted on that instruction manual being part of every LEGO set you build. But for some sets, the instruction manual is disappearing. Think about the things in your world that come with instructions and those that don’t. Then call attention to Question #1 (What’s something that should come with a set of instructions but doesn’t?) and invite volunteers to respond.

Get Into the Study [Option from Adult Leader Guide, p. 83]
In advance, show a funny video clip of someone who obviously needs a set of instructions for something. Then ask Question #1.
Study the Bible
Use the following information to introduce Question #3.
Jess Pariso teaches first grade at William Paca Elementary, a Baltimore City public school. Her church, Redemption City Church, is right across the street from the school. When Pariso noticed that one of her students was struggling, she talked to the student’s family and asked if she could invite the student to attend church with her. That student started attending. Soon other students from school wanted to come to church too. Now Pariso brings multiple students, with their parents’ permission, to church with her on Sundays.
Adam Muhtaseb is the pastor for preaching and vision at Redemption City. He said, “Jess is bridging the gap between the racial and economic divides in the city, because she teaches in an inner-city school and brings children in the community to church.”
Pariso believes that her work points people to Christ. “In order for me to do ministry holistically, it’s important that kids see me and can come along and see how Christ has changed my life. True discipleship and change happens when living life side by side.”
Say: Jess Pariso is living according to God’s Word, demonstrating to her students and their families that Christ has changed her life. Then call attention to Question #3 (Who has taught or modeled for you what it means to live according to God’s Word?) and invite volunteers to respond.
