The Resurrection of Jesus
The Point: New life is possible when we trust in the risen Christ.
Get Into the Study
Use the following to introduce today’s session.
Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa has tickets for SpaceX’s first civilian mission around the moon, and he is looking for eight people to join him. In his search for fellow travelers, Maezawa has said, “Are you satisfied with what you’re doing right now? By going into space could you do something that’s even better, even bigger? If that sounds like you, please join me.”
Space travel was impossible for most of human history but became a reality in the mid-20th century. Though often imagined, civilian space travel continued to be elusive, until recently. Now it looks like low-orbit civilian space travel may begin this year, with trips around the moon beginning in 2023.
The competition is high for a spot alongside Maezawa on his trip, as what once seemed impossible may become a reality.
God has made the impossible possible. New life is possible when we trust in the risen Christ. And we don’t have to compete for a spot or try to prove our worthiness. In Christ, we have the promise of new life based solely on His merit.

After studying John 20:19-23, help group members see that they can’t give away something they don’t already have. Play this video of a relay race where a team dropped its baton. Follow with the directives on page 67.
Live It Out
As you conclude today’s session, share the following story.
Researchers in Japan have published findings showing a sea slug decapitating itself and then regenerating an entirely new body. While it has been known that some lizards and crabs can detach their tails or legs and regrow appendages, scientists were surprised that the slug was able to survive for three weeks as it regrew nearly 85% of its body weight including heart, kidneys, and other major organs.
An extraordinary feat of regeneration, news of the sea slug is a fun fact to share with others. But how much more extraordinary is the resurrection of Jesus and our future resurrection to eternal life? This week, look for opportunities to share this extraordinary fact with others.

In advance of your closing prayer, invite a group member to lead the group in singing a resurrection song like “Because He Lives.” You may also choose to play a video of the song and have group members quietly reflect on the meaning of the resurrection.
