EXTRA! Ideas for Adults – Resurrection – Session 2

April 6, 2020 By Brian Gass Leave a Comment

Date: April 19, 2020

Why the Resurrection Matters

The Point: The resurrection of Christ changes everything.

Get Into the Study

Use the following discussion as an alternate introduction to today’s session.

Zoom calls, FaceTime, BlueJeans, Marco Polo, and more are all ways people are communicating with each other now. While some of these video chatting platforms aren’t new, their widespread usage has soared in the recent days of staying home. Previously, most people got up, had some coffee, got dressed, and went about their day from the office, the restaurant, the store front, the classroom, or home. In today’s current situation most of the meetings, conversations, classes, worship and moments of catching up with friends are happening through interactive video. Our perspective has had to change on what it means to “go to a meeting,” or “going to class” all at physical distance yet right in each other’s living rooms.

Ask, “How have video calls and virtual meetings changed our coming together and being close while physically distant?” Allow time for discussion. These new ways of communicating have changed interactions in the midst of crisis and may change how we “gather” from here on out. In today’s session, we’ll study one event that changed all of history, and not just how we communicate and gather. The resurrection of Christ changes everything.

Dr. Beth Masters is currently working as a hospital chaplain where she engages with families, patients, and hospital staff during critical life moments. She has a Ph.D. in Christian Education from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary where she teaches Collegiate Ministry. Beth loves young adults, baking, and coffee.

Download an illustration of an electric light bulb . Also bring several dry-erase markers, a dry-erase board, a permanent marker, and a sheet of paper. Follow the instructions provided on page 39 of  the Advanced Bible Study Teacher Guide.

Live It Out

Use the following to introduce the Live It Out section.

On March 19th, Governor Gavin Newsom of California issued the first state-mandated stay-at-home restriction in an attempt to minimize the spread of coronavirus. All non-essential services were shut down and residents were urged to practice social distancing and avoid crowds. However, that same weekend crowds gathered at California beaches. Apparently frustrated as people ignored the guidelines, Los Angeles Mayor, Eric Garcetti, posted to Twitter, “This weekend we saw too many people packing beaches, trails and parks. So we are closing sports and recreation at @LACityParks and closing parking at city beaches. That doesn’t mean gather elsewhere. This is serious. Stay home and save lives.”

While some people at the beaches may not have believed the information about the spread of coronavirus, it appears that many of the people were merely failing to allow this information to impact their lives and decisions.

When it comes to the resurrection of Jesus Christ, agreeing to the facts is not the same as allowing the truths to transform your life. How will the truth of the resurrection impact your life this week?

Nikki Wilbanks grew up in Tennessee before heading to California to study literature at Pepperdine University. After graduation, she enjoyed a decade-long career as a commercial real estate appraiser and investor. Having returned to Tennessee with her husband, she is now thrilled to be a stay-at-home mom, writer, and Bible study teacher.

Live It Out (Adult Leader Guide Option)

In advance, prepare an inspiring video clip of the resurrection of Christ. Again make the point that the resurrection of Christ changes everything.
